Two moss-covered urns stand sentinel in a corridor of ancient trees, one behind the other, leading somewhere the light doesn't quite reach. The leaves have fallen. The branches are bare. There is the distinct feeling that something is waiting at the end of this path, some other version of the garden, some quieter and more honest version of the place, if you are only willing to keep walking. Mount Wilson does this constantly. It holds things just out of reach and rewards only the people who don't turn back. I have never been able to turn back. That is probably why I keep finding myself in places like this, alone, in the cold, waiting to see what comes next.

Light in a forest is always moving and almost always indifferent to whether you are watching. This shaft found a cluster of tiny flowers on top of a hedge and stayed just long enough for me to notice it, long enough for one frame, and then it was gone. Everything around those flowers was in deep shadow. The trees behind were soft and distant. The forest floor invisible. To find a moment like this you have to be already inside the place, already still, already paying close attention to things that most people walk past without stopping. You cannot rush toward these images. You have to already be there when they happen. This one reminded me why I always am.

The kookaburra is one of the most recognisable birds in the country. You know the laugh, you know the silhouette, you know the image of it sitting on a gum branch in the hard midday sun waiting for something to move in the grass below.

Most wildlife keeps its distance. It hears you coming, decides you're not worth the risk, and is gone before you get anywhere near it. The crimson rosella did not get this memo.

This one stayed put. Watched you approach. Tilted its head just slightly as if to say it had nowhere else to be and neither, apparently, did you. The lichen on the bark, the red against the grey, the absolute lack of urgency on the bird's part - it all adds up to an encounter that felt less like spotting wildlife and more like being assessed by it.

Seal Bay, Kangaroo Island SA, 2026

Seal Bay is one of the last places on earth where Australian sea lions come ashore to rest, nurse their young, and simply exist on their own terms. It is home to one of the largest colonies of this rare and vulnerable species, animals that have called this stretch of Kangaroo Island coastline their own for as long as anyone can remember.

They greet each other the way they have always greeted each other. Nose to nose, breath to breath, reading something in the other that no human has ever learned to translate.
